Van Alstyne, Texas -- In their season opener, the defending Class A State Champion Dodd City Lady Hornets picked up right where they left off with a one-point victory over the Class 4A Van Alstyne Lady Panthers.
Van Alstyne came into the contest fresh off a 71-42 win over Class 5A Denison in the Lady Panthers' season opener, but this game proved to be much more of a challenge.
After the first quarter, Van Alstyne and Dodd City were tied 10-10, but a strong second period gave Dodd City a 27-20 lead at halftime.
Van Alstyne managed to trim its deficit down to 38-34 going into the fourth quarter and the Lady Panthers slipped in front with time running out.
Dodd City trailed by two points with less than a minute on the clock when Natally Medina was fouled and hit the first free throw to make it a one-point game. The Lady Hornets rebounded the missed second free throw. Dodd City worked the ball inside to Kylee Graves and the senior came through with the game-winning basket with 2.9 seconds on the clock to give the Lady Hornets a 52-51 victory.
Ali Preas and Lindsey Mauppin finished with 14 points apiece to pace the Dodd City offense.
Kylee Graves put up eight points, Tori Dotson dropped in seven points, Sonora Wild scored six, Addyson Chaney chipped in two points and Natally Medina netted a free throw.
Dotson and Preas both grabbed six rebounds.
The Lady Hornets will travel to Bells on Tuesday, November 16.
