Henrietta, Texas -- The Dodd City Hornets overpowered Perrin-Whitt 13-0 and 12-2 to sweep the Region II-1A quarterfinal series. Both games were played Friday at Henrietta High School.
In the series opener, Dodd City scored three runs in the top of the first inning and came right back to score three more runs in the second inning to take control. The Hornets picked up a run in the third, added a run in the fourth and then put the game away with five runs in the fifth frame to post a runaway 13-0 playoff victory.
Brayden Vaught, Logan Lackey, Landon Allen, Kason Carson, Layton Vaught, Nick Glover and Aaron Munger all had a hit and the patient Hornet batters worked the Perrin-Whitt pitching staff for 10 walks.
Munger went the distance to collect the win, striking out six and scattering four hits.
Dodd City struck suddenly in the nightcap, scoring four runs in the first inning and cruising to a 12-2 win in six innings. Once again, the opportunistic Hornets took advantage of the opposing pitchers' control issues and used 12 walks to fuel their offense.
Brody Mauppin went 3-for-3 with one RBI.
Ashton Balvin was 1-for-2 with three runs batted in and scored three times.
Logan Lackey had one hit, drove in a pair of runs and scored twice.
Landon Allen and Nick Glover both had one hit and one RBI.
Aaron Munger had two RBIs.
This time it was Brayden Vaught going the distance for the win, fanning 11 batters, only issuing one walk and limiting Perrin-Whitt to five hits.
Dodd City, the No. 1-ranked Class A program in Texas, improves to 23-1 on the year.
The Hornets advance to the regional semifinals against Saint Jo in Era on Wednesday, May 19, with the first game of the series to start at 2:00 p.m. The second game will follow. If needed, game three will be Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
