Leonard, Texas -- On a night when the shots wouldn't fall and fouls were adding up, the Dodd City Lady Hornets worked and willed their way into the finals of the 61st Leonard Holiday Tournament with a gritty 43-37 win over the Chisum Lady Mustangs in the semifinals.
Chisum grabbed a 10-4 lead, but Addyson Chaney hit a three-pointer and a lay-up and Lindsey Mauppin drained a triple at the buzzer to whittle Chisum's lead down to two points, 14-12, as the first quarter ended.
Autumn Brown hit a mid-range jump shot, Mauppin knocked down another triple, Chaney stopped and popped from 10 feet, Brianna Rodriguez banked in a lay-up and Chaney hit a jumper, but it wasn't enough to reel in a hot-shooting Chisum team that took a 26-23 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Chisum took a 30-29 lead into the fourth quarter, with Mauppin and Chaney saddled with four fouls apiece, but Mauppin hit a lay-up to give Dodd City a 31-30 advantage with seven minutes left in the game.
Brown pulled down an offensive rebound and took it back up for a basket. Chisum tied the score at 34-34 only to watch Mauppin come up with a timely steal and take it in for two points that gave Dodd City a 36-34 lead.
Mauppin connected on a 10-foot jump shot, Chaney drove inside for a bucket and Natally Medina hit both ends of a one-and-one as Dodd City stretched its lead to 41-37 with 48 seconds on the clock.
Mauppin picked up her fifth foul with 14 seconds remaining but by then Dodd City was well on its way to a hard-earned 43-37 victory in the semifinals.
The championship game in the girls bracket will feature Dodd City and Whitesboro, with tip-off set for 7:00 p.m. Friday night.
